Ocknell 2017

Camped up at about 16:00, we managed to get our favorite spot at the end looking over a little valley.

Had a couple of G&Ts and then spread Geza’s ashes over a little tree in the valley. It was the same spot he used to watch looking out for deer and rabbits 2 years earlier and sums up New Forest camping for us.

Pizza for tea, followed by a terrific thunderstorm, lightning the whole works.

Next day we extended our stay and took a walk to the Royal Oak, Fritham.

Tonight chicken indian, rice and small naan.

Tomorrow not sure may move somewhere else.

Family Camp 2017

Arranged to stay at Wigrams Camping in Southam, with part of the family.

Alistair & Julie, Rachel, Jamie,Gemma, Chris, Neil, Jacqui, Lawrence, Lorna, Katie and Chad.

Everyone arrived on Friday evening, Ali & Julie along with Rachel and Jamie in Jamie’s dad caravan had already pitched up, slotted into our prearranged space. We then put up the event shelter between the 2 vans and their awnings.

We then put up the tents.

Jemma and Chris arrived next followed by Katie and Chad, and finally Lawrence and Lorna. Once all arrived we had the pre cooked Chilli and Rice.

We went to bed about 23:30.

Next day slowly awoke off breakfast we decided to move the tents as the people nearby had been quite late and the kids had woken really early.

New layout much better more inclusive and feels more private.

Then took ourselves off for a walk to the Calcutt Boat yard, thought there was a cafe but turns out to be an art gallery and shop. Pleasant enough and worth it just see Julie crossing a lock gate twice!

Upon return Boule sets were dug out and a couple of games ensued. Chad had to leave to fly to China, Katie took him and later that evening returned.

BBQ set up and cooked using the big Car as which was excellent, cooked everything easily, set it up in the Quest popup which worked very well.

Quieter eve, in bed about 23:30.

Next day cooked up bacon again and then packed up took ages, but easy with many hands.

Weather all weekend was fantastic, hot, dry with clear skies.

All decided it went well, Wigrams had too many tents booked in and the one shower was not enough.

MHF Misterton 2017

Arrived at Misterton after Hoddom Castle, if was a nice weekend, late on the Friday but early on the Saturday. Did a walk to a micro brewery come pub and spent most of the day with Cliffandger. Met up with David and Bev, Debs, and @Scout (Phil and Angela) who were also at Kelso. Most are heading up to Falkirk maybe next year we shall see.

Not a campsite I would ever choose to stay at, in fact might try and avoid it, just abit odd. No toilet etc.. and has tents???

 

MHF Millport 2017

Got ferry from Largs to Millport very quick easy and efficient.

Set up in the field behind the Garrison House Cafe, ground a bit soft and also a public footpath running across the top with a fenced off football pitch 5 aside. Ground was very soft.

Very nice place plenty of pubs and some shops, small Spar type shop and a bank which only open 2 days a week though.

Great bay for launching kayaks and with a flat round round the island Cumbrae 10 miles long great for cycling.

After much debate we all moved Tuesday AM to firmer ground round by the car park, joining AllanAndLoren.

Cycled round the island very easy and pleasant, girls went for a swim in the bay whilst we went to the pub across the road.

Weds Kayaking which although a bit chaotic was good fun.

Thursday left to head down to Misterton.

 

 

MHF Kelso

Arranged by Helen and Martin (MHF@puddleduck), arrived Friday evening after driving up from Delamere Forest stopping at Tebay on the way.

Lovely warm weather

Walked into Kelso on the Saturday, had a communal bbq in the evening cooked by @Clive and @peterC10, tried dancing but chaotic, also offered a shower at Helen and Martin house, as they have Solar water heating and need to use it up, myself Tim (@Wizzer) and Helen.

Sunday walked and cycled to the Thomson monument took pics and then came back, great Indian meal prepared by @pigginchilli (Steve and Nadine) quite hot! Then dismantled the Event shelter.

Monday breakfast cooked by Martin, and left for Millport.

 

Delamere Forest CC&C

Typical CC&C site, escorted to pitch, put on hardstanding by default, want payment whilst driving.

Facilities ok, showers look small.

Good location for dogwalks and forest access.

Headed off the the MHF meet at the Thetford Rugby club, arrived Friday about 16:00 pitched up with awning for protection from the sun.

  • cooked homemade Chicken Tikka very good see recipe
  • Geza better than expected at first got in and out of van but not well and had to leave Sunday early.

Village vets

  • nice vets,
  • but sad very sad.

Moved to Lyndon Top after vet visit:

  • stopped at Grafham saw a Visla
  • Lyndon Top 7.00 pn no ehu or wc etc… Â GREAT Site
  • cycled round Rutland excl peninsula
  • stopped at Noel Whitwell, very good food, closes 2:30 unless you ring to ask.

  • late leaving as they did not put the skylight together correctly!
  • front VB Spring Coils fitted 850 inc vat did not believe our quote of 615 inc vat from E&P

Cable Considerations

Measuring Cable

Electricity is measured in terms of amperage, voltage, and wattage. Amperage (amps for short) is a measure of the AMOUNT of electricity used. Voltage (volts) measures the pressure, or FORCE, of electricity. The amps multiplied by the volts gives you the wattage (watts), a measure of the WORK that electricity does per second.

Think of it this way: Electricity flowing through a wire is like water flowing through a garden hose. The amount of water that can fit through the hose depends on the diameter of the hose (amps). The pressure of the water depends on how far open the tap is (volts). The amount of work that can be done (watts) depends on both the amount and the pressure of the water (volts x amps = watts).

Terminology

Cable Size or “Gauge”

In Europe cable is measured CSA or Cross Sectional Area in Millimetres Squared. AWG or American Wire Gauge is still used as a comparison

This is not the diameter but the area of the cross section (i.e looking directly at  a cut section of the conductor circle (if round) and measured in mm2. The measurement is of the copper only.

The insulation is not a part of the calculation of CSA or Cable gauge.

Cores and Conductor

The core of the cable or conductor can be made of a solid, standard or finely stranded wires. This is called the core or conductor.

Cable or Core sizes are measured by the total CSA of conductor or strands.

The most commonly seen cable sizes are usually seen by

  • Number of cores
  • Number of strands per core
  • CSA of the individual strand

Eg. A Single Core 2.5mm 50/0.25 cable would equate to a single core or conductor containing 50 strands of wire, each strand measuring 0.25mm squared. The total CSA or area is 2.5mm squared. This size cable is equivalent to a 14 AWG American Wire Gauge Cable.

Insulation

The “jacket” of the cable or individual cores is an important factor when determining your application. Insulation can widely differ; some may look the same but contain different materials than will affect the performance and conductivity.

It is best to search for your application keyword i.e automotive, appliance etc and then look for the cable specifics to confirm it meets your requirements. ISO or British Standards also reinforce the cable specification. Some standards refer to the conductor and others to the insulation. Insulation can come in a variety of colours and quality.

Most importantly the insulation specification is directly relevant to the capacity and performance.

The same conductor size may well carry different currents because of the insulation properties associated with the cable.

A good example is Automotive Thin Wall Cable. The very name refers to the insulation being thin. In the 1990’s the automotive industry incorporated this type of cable into modern vehicle wiring looms. The insulation is a high grade hard PVC. Most cables only have a 0.3mm insulation thickness and together with a tough hard PVC insulation. This makes them hard wearing and they can easily be bundled together and the thinness makes them both lighter in weight and thinner in volume. Standard automotive cable is still widely used in aftermarket fitments and the rewiring of older looms. This is generally 0.8mm in thickness.

DERATING YOUR CABLE

Derating is the operation of a device at less than its rated maximum capability in order to prolong its life. Typical examples include operation below the maximum power rating, current rating, or voltage rating. When electricity is passed through a cable, heat is produced. The insulation absorbs the heat. Maximum continuous power of a cable in a specification refers to in being at sea level in free ambient air.

When you cover, bundle or duct a cable you must de-rate it. If you plan to use the cable at the upper end of the maximum continuous power this is a very important consideration to make. The cables will get hot and melt if you do not. This includes running a group of cables together at the upper end of the maximum power rating. The derating factor is a complex calculation and depends on the individual application and the material that come into contact with the cable.

Bromyard Downs

Nice site, good walks for dogs, facilities as they are are good, very neat and tidy, near the road but quiet at night. Being on a bend crossing the road from the site need to be careful.

Issue for Motorhomes, we use a 6.4m motorhome and only just managed to fit on a hardstanding pitch, the hardstanding pitches are small (very small), some are much bigger but obviously more popular. It is impossible to pitch in the traditional manner of car, van, awning and gap, just not possible. The difference in the awning and non awning pitch size is negligible. Grass pitch sizes are better but Motorhomes discouraged from using when we went, although very firm and not sloping.

We would stay again as nice site and for us a good location but disappointed by the pitch size.
